Ready to Reconnect with Your Body and Find Inner Balance?
Discover personalised, trauma-informed Nervous System Yoga, integrating Polyvagal Theory insights to empower you in cultivating resilience and balance in mind, body, and spirit.
A flexible, adaptable and resilient nervous system that can meet everyday challenges is fundamental to our wellbeing, profoundly influencing our physical, emotional, and mental health. Nervous System Yoga blends ancient wisdom with modern neurophysiology to cultivate this essential balance. Through trauma-informed, experiential practices, you'll learn tools to regulate emotions, enhance resilience, and support healing—whether you're dealing with trauma, chronic stress, or digestive issues. Discover how mind-body practices and science-backed methods can regulate your nervous system, deepen your mind-body connection, and guide you towards vibrant health and happiness.
Through a Polyvagal Theory lens, we understand that our bodies have an innate, ever-vigilant system for assessing safety and threat. This internal guardian doesn't rely on conscious thought alone - it's constantly scanning our environment, our physical sensations, and our social interactions for cues of safety or danger.
When our nervous system perceives safety, it enables our body to enter a state of rest, restoration, and connection. We experience calmness, openness, and ease. This state supports healing, digestion, and social engagement. However, if the system detects a threat, even at a subconscious level, it activates protective responses. These can manifest as heightened arousal (fight or flight), anxiety, a desire to withdraw, or in some cases, a sense of numbness or disconnection.
By understanding this adaptive process, we can learn to create environments and practices that signal safety to our nervous system. This can lead to improved wellbeing, better relationships, and a greater capacity to handle life's everyday challenges. Through mind-body practices, we can train this inner guardian to more accurately distinguish between real threats and false alarms, helping us find balance and ease in our daily lives.
“Trauma causes the body to be frozen in a state of fear, terror and hypervigilance...one’s body gives the signal that it’s not safe, and your body keeps fighting an existing memory.”
~ BESSEL VAN DER KOLK
How Mind-Body Practices Work
- Increased Distress Tolerance: By developing the capacity to observe our experiences and tolerate discomfort, we can reduce emotional reactivity. This often leads to a decrease in symptoms associated with anxiety, panic, chronic pain, and depression.
- Improved Mental Outlook: These practices foster increased self-awareness, self-acceptance, and compassion, contributing to a more positive mental state.
- Enhanced Somatic Awareness: Mind-body practices improve our ability to sense and interpret signals from our body (interoception) and our position in space (proprioception). This heightened body awareness helps us find resolution to chronic and traumatic stress through movement, breath, and increased body awareness.
- Physiological Changes: Regular practice can lead to improvements in vagal tone (the activity of the vagus nerve), vagal efficiency (how effectively the vagus nerve functions), and heart rate variability (the variation in time between heartbeats). These changes contribute to better overall resilience to everyday stressors.
This approach allows individuals to develop a more balanced, resilient nervous system, leading to improved overall wellbeing and the ability to navigate life's challenges with greater ease.
